Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions are normally for patients with long-term conditions who receive regular treatment.

Your doctor will explain the repeat prescription system when you begin regular treatment.

You can order a repeat prescription by dropping off a request in the box just inside the surgery entrance, accessing our online services or by faxing the surgery on 0118 979 6484.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service which allows your GP to send your prescription request electronically to the pharmacy of your choice for collection , which means you will no longer need to go to the surgery to collect your prescription.

If you are happy to collect your prescription from the surgery you do not need to do anything else.

If you would like to collect your prescription directly from a pharmacy offering this service, you will need to visit your preferred pharmacy and ask them to set this up for you. This is a very quick and easy process.

Most pharmacies offer two options for collection:-

1. You drop off your repeat prescription in the box just inside the surgery or if you have registered for online services via patient access, the doctor wil then sign it and it wil be electronically posted to your nominated pharmacy. Once the pharmacy has received your repeat prescription it will be ready for dispensing. You will not need to go to the surgery to collect your prescription.

2. The pharmacy will make the request on your behalf to the surgery for your repeat prescription and on receipt will have it ready for dispensing. (You will not need to go to the surgery to drop off or collect your prescription) . IMPORTANT – This arrangement is only suitable if you have a stable condition and you normally request all medication on your prescription at the same time.

You may receive marketing literature from companies offering home delivery services. They offer an alternative option for patients and are marketed independently from the GP Practise.

None of the above service require you to have computer access, all are arranged between you and the pharmacy of your choice.

ARE YOU AWARE? IF YOU ARE TAKING MANY MEDICATIONS, MOST PHARMACIES WILL DISPENSE THESE INTO A WEEKLY/MONTHLY DISPENSING BOX IF REQUESTED.

Please provide the exact drug names wherever possible.

Allow at least 2 clear working days after submitting your request before collecting your prescription from the surgery or your nominated pharmacy.

Your doctor will review all repeat prescriptions regularly.

Patients with some chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and asthma, will be seen regularly to monitor their condition.

Please tell us if any changes to your repeat prescription have been made by the hospital, or if you stop any medication by yourself.

Do NOT stockpile unwanted drugs at home: return them to the pharmacy!

Prescription Charges

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS prescription costs as of 1 April 2016

  • The current prescription charge is £8.40.
  • A three monthly PPC is £29.10. This saves you money if you need four or more items in three months.
  • A 12-month certificate is £104.00 and saves money if 15 or more items are needed in 12 months.

You can pay for prescription prepayment certificatesin 10 monthly direct debit instalments.

(People aged 60 or over, as well as children under 16, and young people aged 16, 17 and 18 in full-time education,  get free NHS prescriptions.)

Further information about prescription exemptions, fees and PPCs is available on the NHS website.
